SUMMARY:Cell Symposia: Infection biology in the age of the microbiome
DESCRIPTION:Cell Symposia: Infection biology in the age of the microbiome\nClassical studies of microbiology neglected the roles of resident communities\, within which most pathogens function\, creating simpler models for studying infection. Traditionally\, this area of research has been separate from studies of so-called good bugs. Yet recently\, a microbial community view of pathogenesis has taken shape: one in which molecules\, machinery\, and mechanisms that were discovered studying bacterial infection are now being applied to understand the interplay between pathogens\, resident microbes\, and the host environment. The integration of next-generation sequencing\, metabolomics\, and genome-engineering techniques has expanded the horizons of infection biology\, enabling the interrogation of increasingly complex systems. \nThe meeting will explore bacterial pathogens and pathogenesis from multiple perspectives\, from cellular mechanisms to interbacterial interactions and community behavior\, as well as pathogenesis in the complex milieu of the microbiota. The meeting will also highlight the pathogenic potential of the microbiome and explore microbiota-based and engineered antibacterial/therapeutic approaches. \nOur topics will include: \n\nBacterial communication and signaling\nInterbacterial and interkingdom interactions\nPathogen interactions with hosts and microbiomes\nCommensal homeostasis and dysbiosis\nMicrobiome-based opportunities for therapy\n\nThis innovative program will unite pathogenesis stalwarts with microbiome pioneers to share their collective knowledge—spanning molecules\, microbes\, and communities — to envision the future of infection biology research and therapeutic intervention.

SUMMARY:Making\, imaging\, and stressing multicellular spheroids and organoids
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid : Zoom + Room B241 \nWe will first introduce the microfluidic technique that we developed to encapsulate cells and generate multicellular spheroids or organoids. We will then focus on selected examples that highlight specific aspects of cell self-assembly and mechanotransduction in 3 dimensions. Technological developments related to the difficulty in imaging spheroids in a high throughput format will be reported. Finally\, biomedical applications in oncology and regenerative medicine will be addressed. \n \n \nPierre Nassoy defended his PhD in Soft Matter physics at the University of Paris in 1996\, after studies at the Ecole Supérieure de Physique et Chimie de Paris (headed by Pierre-Gilles de Gennes). He then moved to biophysics as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of British Columbia -advisor: Evan A. Evans). Dr. Nassoy was appointed CNRS junior researcher at the Curie Institute (Paris) in 1999. His research was focused on membrane physics and cell mechanics. In 2012\, he moved to Bordeaux to create the BioImaging and Optofluidics lab (http://biof-lab.org/ ) at the Institut d’Optique and reoriented his research activity towards oncophysics and tissue engineering. In 2018\, he co-founded Treefrog Therapeutics https://treefrog.fr/ )\, a startup dedicated to the production of human induced pluripotent cells and regenerative medicine. In 2022\, he was awarded with the CNRS medal of innovation.
